After three decades’ immersion in Cape Breton and other Celtic musical styles, Susan Burke has developed a commanding repertoire of traditional music. She teaches and performs with numerous ensembles.
Playing for contra dances and Irish ceilidhs coast to coast, she has a spirited and affecting style, and is heard with such bands as DOWRY, Red Crow, and Swinging on a Star. Among her other recording credits are “Celtic Garden” by Bronn Journey and “Gypsy Supper” by William and Alene Bertman. Her debut solo project, Journey Home is a Celtic odyssey, touching on the traditions of Scotland, Cape Breton, and Ireland, among others.
A ” graduate” and tutor of the Festival of American Fiddle Tunes in Port Townsend, Washington, Susan fell in love with the music of Cape Breton Island in the late seventies, hearing the music of Jerry Holland, Carl MacKenzie and Buddy MacMaster, the great exponents of Cape Breton’s music. She learned nearly all her tune repertoire listening to cassette tapes and records.
She performs actively around the Puget Sound area.
